HELP IDENTIFY:MYSTERY TREE, APPEARS AS NUT VARIETY?

1. Intro

This tree is presently growing at the outskirts of a county park in southwestern Pennsylvania.
It is approximately forty feet high.

Here is a closer view of the leaves:

Here is the part that looks like the nut. When fully grown in the fall it is the size of a sickel pear.

Appear to be nuts but they are elongated. In late summer/early fall they appear pear shaped.

Well there you have it. I tried but could not figure it out. Two years ago I opened one of those nut-like husks, Sickle Pear shaped and sized and all I found was an empty pit filled with water - well - at least it appeared like water.
There was no nut inside.
