In partial veils its the membranous cover of the spore bearing surface. Generally covering gills or pores during the growth process. When a partial veil ruptures it can leave remnants on the caps margin or an annulus, or both.
In universal veils its the membranous cover of the entire mushroom. When a universal veil ruptures it can leave remnants on the cap surface and the base of the mushroom stalk, or both.

  • volva - a mushroom tissue mass which encloses the newly created mushroom fruiting body. It is within this mass, oftentimes egg-like in appearance, from which certain species of mushrooms start their existence.
