  • KOH - Chemically it is Potassium Hydroxide. In mycology KOH is one of the several commonly known testing chemicals used to cause color changes in various mushroom tissues.
    Many color changes are specific to certain mushrooms and over the many years the ever increasing list of these changes have been recorded for future reference.
    Whether there is a color change reaction or not, or what color change may occur when KOH is applied, are important features to note in identifying some mushroom species, especially where the outword appearance and overt characteristics may not give a definite identification.
    Other names for the chemical are caustic soda and lye.
