  • jack-o-lantern / jack o'lantern - referring to a poisonous mushroom ( Omphalotus olearius and Omphalotus olivascens ) that, at the spore producing stage of growth, has gills that have a luminescence that can be seen in the dark. Whether the name was given because of that feature or because the coloration is of similarity to a pumpkin - or both - is uncertain.
